 Tips on Report Writing

Suggested Format/Structure

1. Title Page

2. Brief given by teacher

3. Introduction

The introduction should be general and introduce the reader to the background of the topic in question. It will usually not exceed one page.

Example of the opening line for report on Internet security:

"The phenomenal growth of the Internet in Ireland in the last 10 years or so has dramatically changed the way we communicate and do business. At present in excess of...........people have have Internet access in this country.. While there are undoubtedly many advantages to using the Internet there are however a number of security risks that all users need to be aware of...."

Note - The introduction should not have any conclusions!

4. Aim of Report - In not more than one page say what this report will be about - in general terms: e.g. "this report will examine the main issues of Internet security, give a brief explanation of each one and then focus on two in more detail"

5. Objectives - State specifically what this report will be about: e.g. This report will, through online research:

  • Identify the main issues of Internet security which the average users needs to be aware of.

  • Give a brief explanation of each of these issues.

  • Outline the possible threat to a persons, computer, privacy, finances etc.

etc etc

(Normally objectives will be a list in bullet form of the main questions to be answered - it actually sets out a structure for your report)

6. Methodology - State here how you are going to achieve your objectives - (use the Internet, read, copy and paste, then re-write your findings).

7. Research/Findings - This is the heart of your report. Describe your main findings. Evaluate and analyse your findings, show that you understand what you are writing about. Organise your work in a logical and coherent manner. Use headings regularly - this helps keep a structure to your work.

8. Conclusions and recommendations  - Summarise your main findings and issue a summary of your recommendations.

9. Bibliography - list of websites visited.

10. Appendices - Additional information - perhaps a screenshot of a particular website (for spam you could show typical spam).
