"Find Your Sense of Tumour"

On Friday, 7th October, I travelled with ten other members of CanTeen as representatives of teenagers with cancer in Ireland to the ‘Find Your Sense of Tumour’ conference in Nottingham. The conference was held over three days and consisted of interactive surveys in which we got to have our say about how we felt when we were treated by doctors, how facilities for teenagers can be improved, and what we would like changed.

There were also talks about carrying on with life after cancer, fertility, going back to school or college, and how people react to the change in environment. All the information gathered over the weekend will go towards improving facilities for teenage oncology wards. The TCT (Teenage Cancer Trust) will also use the information to help other teenagers who are newly diagnosed have an easier experience.

Senior Rugby

Well done to the Senior Rugby team who travelled the long journey to Sligo on Monday last to play Summerhill College in the Senior Rugby League.

Portumna overpowered Sligo to a 27 – 5 victory adding another 3 points to their league table.

Scores came from David O’Hara and John Nevin.

Well done all. The next match will be an away match Vs Clifden followed by a home gave Vs Calasanctius, Oranmore – dates and times to be fixed. Training will resume on Monday 24th at 4.10 pm sharp. Full panel to attend.

Pakistan Appeal

Many thanks to all the students who went to the trouble of choosing a Charity and giving reasons why they would like the recent collection of just over €1,700 to be distributed by their chosen charity.

The result was the Irish Red Cross by a nose from Concern. The cheque will be sent off next week.

Non Uniform Day

Next Friday, 28th October, there will be a non-uniform day to raise funds for a ticket to enable one of our students to travel as a helper to Lourdes next summer. Valarie Burke travelled with the Lourdes group last August and had a wonderful experience. Each student who wishes to take part in the non-uniform day will be invited to bring €2 which will be collected next Friday. Many thanks.

Junior Girls Soccer

The Junior Girls Soccer panel travelled to Castlerea yesterday to play the first round of the Connacht League. After a two hour trip the Portumna girls had to go straight to the dressing rooms and tog out for a 12 noon kick-off. The conditions were perfect for this match, the pitch was dry, the sun was shining and the game started with a slight breeze in Portumna’s favour. The first 15 minutes saw the ball move from the Castlerea area of the pitch to the Portumna area and back again without any score. Then Castlerea opened the scoring with a very opportunist goal against the run of play. Three minutes later Tina McLaughlin responded with a superb shot to the top of the Castlerea net, leaving the goalie with no chance. Two minutes later one of the Castlerea forwards was fouled in the area giving them a penalty shot from which they took full advantage. Castlerea scored two more goals before half-time leaving the score 4 – 1 at the break. Castlerea started the second half with a great goal after five minutes. Again Tina McLaughlin broke through the Castlerea defence to respond with a lovely goal to the left corner. Two minutes before the end Castlerea scored yet again leaving the final score, Castlerea 6 – Portumna 2.

This team has huge potential and a lot of talent and I believe after another game or two Portumna will begin to make their presence felt. Well done girls.

The green light has just been turned on for our trip to Glasgow. We now have 4 more than we need for the group of 36 and 5 less for the group of 45. However, the important thing is the trip is going ahead on December 10th/11th for the Celtic Vs Hibernian game.

An Gairdin Sustainable Building

This year TY students are taking a course on Sustainable building at An Gairdín. We learned what the concept of sustainability meant –

If we do not live sustainable lives there will be no future on this planet in the long term.

On the first day Ciaran gave us a tour of the garden and explained how to garden in a sustainable way. It was noted that An Gairdín house is also a sustainable house.

We, the first group, are researching building materials such as Hemp, Cob, Cement, Straw-bale and Wood. To identify which product is the most renewable, we were divided into groups of two and each group researched one of these materials. We discovered a lot of interesting and useful information.

We are now researching renewable energy sources and we hope to find out which renewable technology is the best: wind, water, solar, anaerobic digestion, wood pellets and geothermal.

An Gairdín has the geothermal heating system and we got a chance to look at it. We have had an enjoyable four weeks so far.

All Ireland Champions!!

Portumna C.S. 3-3 : St. Flannan’s, Ennis 0-6

Portumna Community School recorded their first ever All-Ireland win with victory in the 7-a-side ‘B’ Final on Saturday last (8th). Fielding a very young team due to club commitments, the girls lost their first game to St. Flannan’s by four points. This left them in a showdown with Loretto, Kilkenny for a place in the final.

The girls put in a great effort winning by six points, but most observers gave them little chance against undefeated Flannans. Playing with the breeze a good start was vital and early goals from Edel Cunningham and Ann Marie Starr stunned the Flannan’s girls. They replied with two points as they failed to create any goal chances against a defence of Ciara Molloy and Marie Duane. Megan Moran added a point to leave Portumna ahead by 2-1 to 0-2 at halftime. Now under pressure to perform, Flannans went for goals but their efforts could not pass Helen Campbell in goals. Tara Ruttledge and Megan Moran bolstered the defence and when Edel Cunningham goaled in reply to two Flannan’s points Portumna were in the driving seat. Two further points from Ann Marie Starr and Megan Moran equalled the Flannan’s efforts and the girls had earned a famous victory. Congratulations to the girls and their Trainer, Mr. Pat Kelly.

Team: Helen Campbell, Ciara Molloy, Marie Duane, Megan Moran (C), Tara Ruttledge, Edel Cunningham, Ann Marie Starr, Anita Burke, Amanda Lynch, Veronica Burke.

Pakistan Appeal

Once again the students and staff of Portumna Community School have responded magnificently to an Appeal. On Thursday between 9.25 and 9.35 a.m. €1,040 was collected for the Pakistan Appeal! Today during the same period €661 was added to bringing the grand total of our collection to €1701.00. A wonderful response to the second major catastrophe this year. As we haven’t yet decided which charity group to donate the money to, a box will be left in the Social Area for your suggestions. Please write the name of the charity to whom you would like the money to be sent and your reasons. Many thanks.

 School Bags

It has been brought to our attention that some students are moving other students’ bags and interfering with their books. This is a practice that infringes the rights of other students. I would ask the students to demonstrate responsibility to others so that all students can go to class with the essential items to get on with their work.
