On Yer Bike!

cyclist_drinking_water.gif (18084 bytes)

All families have this week received details of a major fundraising event – our sponsored cycle which will take place from Killaloe to Portumna on May 27th next. The event will be launched at an information evening in the school on Tuesday next at 8.30 pm.

It is important to emphasise that you do not have to be an experienced or regular cyclist to take part in this event – it is envisaged that the majority of participants will not have cycled in a long time and will be taking on a cycle of this distance for the first time. To help prepare for the event a short training spin is being organised on Thursday evening next, leaving the square in Portumna at 6.30 pm. As pointed out in the letter a special bicycle is not required but a helmet is obligatory.

If you will not be able to attend on Tuesday next but wish to get involved please contact the school to register for the event and to get your sponsorship card. While the primary aim of the cycle is to raise funds for the school it is also very much hoped that this will be both an enjoyable and beneficial event for all participants – so why not go for it! Please note you must be over 18 to participate.

If you are a past pupil and are interested in taking part please email us

Spirited Performance from Junior Camogie Team

Commiserations to our Junior Camogie team who put in a really spirited display in the All-Ireland Final on Saturday last. Despite being a very young team they pushed their opponents all the way and displayed a spirit and passion that all of us present were exceptionally proud to witness. With so many of this team and panel underage again next year the future of Camogie in the school is indeed very bright. Well done also to Miss Harty on working so hard with this team all year and to selectors Ms. Cunningham and Mr. Kelly. As an indication of how close to the ultimate All-Ireland breakthrough we are it is worth noting that the team that narrowly defeated us in the Connacht Senior Final drew the All-Ireland (also against Charleville) two weeks ago.

"Well done to all the Junior Camogie panel for all their hard work, effort and determination throughout the year. No day was too cold or too wet – you trained in dreadful weather conditions throughout the year and this paid off. You won the Connacht, got through to the Semi-Final where you bet Magherafelt and got through to the All Ireland Schools Final - girls you should be very proud of yourselves, you played your very best right to the end on Saturday against an older and more seasoned team. I would like to thank, on behalf of the team and myself, Eugene Duffy, Green Isle, Killimor Camogie Club, Portumna Camogie Club, Loughrea School & Office Supplies and the Shannon Oaks Hotel for their sponsorship. It is very much appreciated. Also, thank you to Ms. Cunningham, Mr. Kelly and all the supporters who travelled on the day."

N. Harty.

I’ve learned that…

.. a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

.. just one person saying to me, "You’ve made my day".. makes my day.

.. if the Lord didn’t do it all in one day what makes me think I can.

.. one should keep one’s words soft and tender because tomorrow he/she may have to eat them.

Congratulations to Amy Fitzpatrick, Mairead Felle and Brian Duffy who all won the lovely prize of two tickets for The Hogan Stand for the big match in Croke Park. Our photo shows the group receiving their tickets from Margaret McLoughney, manager AIB Portumna

The Big Day

Best wishes to Portumna Senior Hurlers tomorrow from the students and staff of Portumna Community School – in particular to Joe Canning and Joe Keane and selector Tom Quinn.

Some interesting snippets about tomorrow’s match:

13 of the starting fifteen are past pupils of the school – the exceptions are Micheál Ryan - a native of Templederry, near Thurles, and Gareth Heagney from Limerick.

What have Jason/Garry Kilkenny and Mr. Loughnane got in common? Their father’s all have All-Ireland Club medals – Ollie and Tony Kilkenny with Kiltormer in 1992 and Francis Loughnane with Roscrea in the first ever Club final in 1971.hurling montage.jpg (64836 bytes)

At the last count there were in excess of 80 specially prepared wooden boards with messages of support for the team to be seen in the Portumna area. Not to mention the hundreds of flags, bunting and window displays. Well done! Pride of place must go to the work of Brendan and Brian Murray for their superb displays – Brian’s "Skin ‘em Alive" sculpture has attracted huge attention. If you haven’t yet seen it at night – it is well worth a look!

skin em alive.jpg (62165 bytes)
Brian Murray's "Skin 'Em Alive" sculpture

The Killimor minor hurling team will also be travelling to Croke Park tomorrow - earlier in the day they will play a challenge match against Dublin side, St. Kevin’s.

In a rather desperate effort to come up with unique snippets of interest we unearthed the following – The Portumna captain – Eugene McEntee and Mr. Kilkenny share the same birthday – if we had enough space we would give you both the date and the year which would be very interesting (particularly the year!)… unfortunately we don’t!

A reminder from the Portumna GAA club that buses will leave the square at 8.30am sharp.

To everyone travelling tomorrow – have an enjoyable and safe trip.

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day 2006, at least from a GAA perspective, will hold either fantastic or sad memories for all four communities involved in the All-Ireland Hurling and Football Finals in Croke Park.

In an Ireland that has shot up the leader board of rich nations in the world, has the life of St. Patrick anything to say to the people of a very changed country? While the day itself will probably be remembered more for its green pints, parades and parties, there will also be those looking for something with a little more depth.

I believe St. Patrick’s life and work can still influence and inspire the lives of many throughout the world.

Patrick was determined to turn a fierce and illiterate people into a gospel-loving, literate and peaceful people. Despite many difficulties he was single-minded in his approach to influence for good the Irish people, and we, together with the people of Nigeria are proud to share this great man as our patron saint.

What are Good Manners?

Every culture has evolved with slightly different interpretations of good manners but the basic principles are the same. Good Manners are a significant part of who you are. They are about Civility, Mutual Respect and Shared Values. A society without these three is not a society at all but a civil war zone.

Modern manners take the good from the etiquette of the last century and blend it with today’s values and protocols. They are about how we live our lives in society today. Included in this are the shared ethics and a moral code which evolves from our shared values of Common Decency; Social & Cultural Respect; Hard Work; Kindness, Compassion & Charity; Courtesy & Politeness. Put together these represent a genuine care and concern for others, where privacy is respected, power is not abused and forgiveness is key.

Manners are life skills. They give young people an advantage.

By learning and using manners, young people become more confident. They are also more comfortable when they know how to get along with others.

Treating others the way you would like to be treated is the easiest rule to follow and encourages others to treat you in kind.

Please & Thank-You :

"These are always important to all ages, all people and all occasions. Never leave an event without saying thank you. Always acknowledge an act of kindness.

No excuses, just do it."

Junior ‘A’ Camogie All Ireland Semi-Final

Connacht Vs Ulster – Portumna C.S. 3-5 : St. Mary’s 2-5

Portumna C.S. travelled to Tynagh last Friday, to play St. Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt.

Tara Ruttledge opened the score with a fabulous point. She held her own against a challenging opponent

scoring a further goal and two points from play. Megan Moran did equally well getting a goal and a point. Stacey Coen and Amanda Lynch both added to the final score. Helen Campbell defended her goal well making some great saves throughout the match. The back line - Blaithin Conroy, Marie Duane and Laura Shiel - defended their positions excellently, as did the half back line - Claire Killeen, Catherine O’Meara and Ciara Molloy. Ann Marie Starr stepped into Edel Cunningham’s position and did herself proud (Edel was out injured). Claire Harte delivered some well placed balls to the forwards, with some great attempts at goal by Veronica Burke and Katie O’Brien. Our subs Eimear Finnegan and Nicola Muldoon did themselves proud. Overall the team played well and the girls are looking forward to the challenge of the Final which takes place on the 25th of March (venue to be decided).

Junior Girls Soccer

Portumna Junior Girls Soccer panel travelled to Borrisokane on Tuesday last to play their opponents on their home pitch. The Portumna girls arrived on the pitch with a brand new set of jerseys, togs and socks in the familiar Celtic strip, thanks to the initiative of Mike Cowen, who got sponsorship by raffling a signed Celtic Jersey (the draw to take place on St. Patrick’s night). Thanks a million Mike.

These Portumna girls were out to impress, with or without goals. While Borrisokane got the first goal after just five minutes of play, Portumna responded a few minutes later through a wonderful passing movement which set up Tina McLoughlin for a crashing ball to the top of the net. This was followed by a second Portumna goal 8 minutes later by Shannen Larkin, leaving the half time score Portumna 2 : Borrisokane 1. Portumna started the second half with practically a new team with the exception of Sarah Conboy and Tina McLoughlin. Again Borrisokane opened the scoring after 15 minutes levelling the match at 2-2. Portumna, playing against a pretty strong breeze, were under pressure and found themselves 3-2 down after 20 minutes. However, Portumna never gave up and worked the ball back up field only to have a lovely goal by Aoife Conway disallowed for being off-side (even though we weren’t playing offside). This did not deter the Portumna girls from keeping on the pressure and within 3 mins Sarah Conboy broke through the Borrisokane defence to make it 3-3. In the dying moments of the game Borrisokane clinched the decider to make the final score Borrisokane 4 : Portumna 3. Lisa Forde came on towards the end of the game to see if we could get an equaliser, but unfortunately the ball didn’t come her way.

This was a great game to watch and well done to all for putting in such a brave effort.

Trocaire 24 Hour Fast

Many thanks once again to all who took part in the Trocaire 24 hour fast last Friday. Please try to have your sponsorship money collected and returned early next week together with your sponsorship card.

Have a nice weekend.

Fr. Abe.

German Film

During the week Ms. Masterson and Ms. Borner brought the 2nd and 3rd year German classes to see a German film ‘Die Wilden Kerle 2’, which means ‘the wild bunch 2’. We left the school at 9.15 a.m. and arrived at the cinema in Athlone at 10.30, which was just in time for the start of the film. It was about two groups of teenagers: the Wild Bunch, who played soccer, were the good group, and Gonzo’s Gang, who were skaters, were the bad ones. A girl from the Wild Bunch (Vanessa) leaves them for the leader (Gonzo) of the other gang.

The whole film is mainly about them trying to get Vanessa back because they need her on their soccer team so they can play Germany. They tried many different ways to win her back and the one that succeeded was when they wrote a letter to her. In the end it all worked out – they got to play Germany and beat them. Thanks to

Ms. Masterson and Ms. Borner for bringing us on this trip.

You’re A Star Final

Most people are probably aware that the You’re A Star finals are being held in Dublin this weekend.

We would like to wish the best of luck in particular to Lucia Evans who visited and sang here in the school a few weeks ago. Lucia and her boyfriend, Shane (who you will surely catch a glimpse of over the weekend on TV) have been very good in the past to the local Chernobyl group. Last October Lucia and her band played a free concert in Treacys, Killimor, for the head shave event while Shane was MC for the evening.

They have offered to come and do a free concert for us again, regardless of the outcome.

Best of luck also to the other Galway contestant, Athenry girl, Marilyn Bane, who is a recent past student of the Presentation College and would have played Camogie against us here on a number of occasions.

The finalists will be on The Late Late Show tonight (Fri.). The Semi-Final is tomorrow night at 8 pm with the Final (featuring at least one Galway contestant!) will be on Sunday at 6.30 pm.

Young Social Innovators

On 22nd February, ten T.Y. students left the school at 8 a.m. to go to Moate Community School where we were taking part in the Young Social Innovators competition. Our project was to encourage students to participate in Volleyball after school while they wait for buses. It was decided to set up a Volleyball Club which was a good success so we brought it to the Y.S.I.

We arrived in Moate at 9.30 and after we registered, the competition got underway. We listened to a few speeches by the organisers and Ms. Mary O’Rourke. When she had finished, Anthony Burke had to present her with flowers. After about ten presentations it was our turn. We had decided that a poem involving ‘rap’ and incorporating ‘role play’ was a good platform to make our point about apathy. Well done to Audrey Hogan who delivered the poem very well. There was some great speeches ranging from ‘teen pregnancy’ and ‘smoking’ to ‘bullying’. It was a very interesting day and a worthwhile experience. Thanks to Ms. Cunningham and Mr. Coughlan for accompanying us on the trip. Well done to the entire team.
