Congratulations to Daniel Eames (2nd year) who recently won the Junior Connacht category of the Sustainable Energy Ireland / Energy Saving Trust’s Photo Competition 2007. Daniel will be presented with his prize (a choice of mobile phone, ipod or digital camera) at a ceremony which will take place on Tuesday, 1st May, in the Helix at Dublin City University. His winning entry, ‘One Key Change’ pictured) encourages the viewer to consider using the bike as an alternative to the car or SUV in an effort to protect the environment.

Trocaire 24 Hr. Fast

We have now passed the €5,000 mark for the Trocaire fundraiser. This is an all-time record! Never before has so much money been collected for charity in our school. Thanks a million to all who took part. The last outstanding cards and money will be collected on Monday. Well done to all concerned.

1st Year Retreat

All first years will be travelling to Esker Monastery on Monday, 23rd April. All students are asked to be in school at 8.45 a.m. as the Coach will be leaving at 9.00 a.m. This is a non-uniform day and full lunch will be provided.

Lourdes Trip 2007

Any Senior student, male or female, who would like to travel to Lourdes as a helper with the Clonfert Diocesan Pilgrimage in August should contact Fr. Abe as soon as possible. The money for the ticket, costing €675, was raised by the student body on a non-uniform day before Christmas. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the atmosphere of Lourdes together with volunteer students from all the 2nd level schools in the diocese.

Croagh Patrick

Having experienced great difficulty in trying to get a date that suited everybody, it was finally decided to climb the reek the week after the Leaving Cert. Graduation Mass, which takes place on Friday, 18th May, 2007.

Win A Digital Camera

Details have been given of an exciting school based photography competition and we are delighted with the interest shown so far by students. The theme of the competition is ‘Our Own Place’ and we invite you to look around your own area for photographs that would help portray where you live. It doesn’t have to be a particularly scenic location; it could be the ordinary everyday happenings that go to make up our lives. A selection of the winning entries will be used to update the section on the local area on the school website.

Some lucky student will walk away with the fabulous prize of a Fuji digital camera and accessories (total value €200) at the end of April – it could be you! We are deeply indebted to Sheila and Brendan Hoary of ‘Picture This’, Portumna, who are donating this fabulous prize.

For more ideas on the types of photographs you could take, have a look at the special section on the school website for this competition. The closing date for entries (maximum of 3) is April 27th.

Essential Study Tips:

With just a few weeks to go to both State and end of year exams it is worth taking stock of your study methods. The following are some well proven tips that if taken into account will have a positive affect on your results:

Make a plan – and stick to it. Why not sit down over the weekend and draw up a detailed plan of action. Prioritise the areas that are in most need of attention and consider dealing with subjects in 45 min blocks.

Study a topic not a subject – don’t aimlessly open a book or notes and "read over" a chapter. It is much more beneficial to select a topic, make a list of what you need to know about that topic, highlight the areas you are least confident about – and study these.

Get Noted – Make out your own revision / summary notes and device novel ways to help you remember important facts / dates / names etc.

Buy the paper and listen to the radio! – Seriously RTE Radio1 and both the Irish Times and Irish Independent run regular very helpful exam guides. Many of these are also available as podcasts and can therefore be downloaded to your mp3 player.

Don’t let anything get in the way – Make your study a priority over the coming weeks – regardless of whatever distractions might arise.

Take good quality breaks. – With the long evenings upon us make the most of your breaks by getting fresh air – a few minutes outside whether it is hitting a ball against a wall or going for a short walk will really refresh your brain.
